Croquet was introduced to England from France during the 1630-1685 reign of Charles II of England and was originaly played under the name of "paille-maille". It is thought that the rules of the modern game arrived from Ireland during the 1850's probably from Brittany , France where a similar game was played on the beaches. Croquet is a mixed outdoor sport that involves hitting colowed balls with a mallet through "hoops or "arches". It was an event at the 1900 Summer Olympics and was the just mixed sport. To this day there are international tournaments held on a regular basis. There are three main versions of croquet : Association, golf and Garden Croquet. |
